Cabinet To Discuss Proposed Restorative Justice Legislation Today

If a legislation to establish the Ministry of Justice's restorative justice programme nationally is passed by Parliament, certain petty offences may not have to go before the already burdened court system, and fewer Jamaicans will end up with criminal records.

Public Can Now Apply For TRN And Tax Compliance Certificates Online

 

Persons can now apply for Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN) and Tax Compliance Certificates online as the Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) has implemented phase two of its new Revenue Administration information System (RAiS)

Supreme Court upholds entire health care law in landmark ruling

(CBS News) In a historic decision, the Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the critical piece of President Obama Affordable Care Act, the individual mandate.

 

By upholding the individual mandate the requirement for all Americans to acquire health insurance the court kept what many described as the heart of the law. The decision creates some certainty surrounding federal health care policy, allowing federal and state rulemakers to, for now, implement the law.

 

The decision was five to four, with Chief Justice John Roberts siding with the liberal justices and writing the majority opinion.

The court found fault with one major provision of the law, which would have expanded Medicaid coverage. Currently, Medicaid is a joint federal-state program that provides health care to certain poor Americans, such as children and the elderly. In 2014, the Affordable Care Act would have opened up Medicaid to anyone with an income under 138 percent of the federal poverty line.

The U.S. Supreme Court denied a last-minute stay of execution for Troy Davis after a delay to weigh arguments from Davis legal team and the state of Georgia over whether his execution should be blocked.

The courts decision to deny the stay came after 10 p.m. ET, more than three hours after Davis execution originally was scheduled today. The court did not comment on its decision.

 

The execution now is expected to occur by 11 p.m. ET.
